The Artwork Story
Bigin (Protective Shield)
Justin Butler's artwork displays the ochre's colours and the designs used on combat shields (Bigin). The intricate design was meant to mesmerise opponents and not give them a central point to aim during combat. The Bandjin warriors used the buttress roots of the cluster fire tree (Bay-gar-ee) to create the shields. The Bandjin people are the traditional owners of Hinchinbrook Island, the largest island on the Great Barrier Reef.
